This case study highlights the successful delivery and site offloading of a SINOTO bitumen tanker truck for a leading road construction client in Nigeria. Facing demanding tropical climate conditions and heavy-duty transport requirements, the client relied on our customized heavy vehicle solution to streamline asphalt transportation and boost highway paving efficiency.
One of the biggest infrastructure companies operating in Lagos, Nigeria, has just landed a key contract for a road widening project for a state highway. The project had to be completed within the strict timeframe set by the client, so the contractor needed a liquid asphalt transport method that was durable and had a high capacity that could work in the difficult local area and ensure the optimal thermal stability of the bitumen during transport.
The transportation of liquid bitumen involves special engineering difficulties. The material has to be kept at higher temperatures (usually from 150° to 180°) to keep it liquid and avoid early solidification. Furthermore, the road conditions in the area demand robust chassis structures, ample ground clearance and robust suspension systems that can withstand heavy use.
Our customized SINOTO Bitumen Tanker Truck solution is designed to meet the client’s specific requirements and has been proven throughout West Africa to be mechanical reliable, with a good heat preservation system and has easy access for maintenance.
To address the specific climate and operational demands of Nigerian road construction, the SINOTRUK tanker was engineered with several tailored features:
|
Feature |
Specification / Function |
|
Chassis & Powertrain |
Heavy-duty 6 times drive configuration powered by a high-torque 371 HP engine, paired with reinforced parabolic leaf springs. |
|
Thermal Insulation |
Multi-layer tank body wrapped in thick rock wool insulation and outer stainless steel jacketing to minimize heat loss during long distance trips. |
|
Heating System |
Built-in automatic diesel burners connected to internal heating flues, ensuring quick temperature recovery if needed prior to discharge. |
|
Pumping Mechanism |
High-viscosity internal gear pump operated via PTO (Power Take-Off), enabling bi-directional pumping for fast loading and unloading. |
After a rigorous inspection at the factory and sea transport from China, the delivery was safe in the Port of Lagos. Our logistics team worked together with local maritime customs brokers to ensure timely clearance.
Our technical representative run a comprehensive pre delivery inspection (PDI) after they are released from the port terminal including checking tyre pressures, fluid levels, PTO engagement and checking the burner electronics. It was then taken directly to the client’s Central Asphalt Mixing Plant on the outskirts of Ogun State.

Unloading liquid bitumen requires systematic safety and operational protocols to ensure smooth transfer to storage tanks without spillages or heat drops.
The driver places the SINOTO tanker on the ground next to the main storage silox of the asphalt plant. Wheel chocks and fire extinguishers are used as soon as they are required, and grounding cables are used.
Quality Check. Operators use the top inspection port to check the temperature of the liquid bitumen in order to keep in the proper fluid range (160°).
Mechanical Lineup. The discharge hoses are heavy duty heat resistant and are quickly connected to the truck’s rear discharge manifold by flange clamps.
Low-speed PTO drive system is engaged inside the cab, and the high-viscosity asphalt pump is started. The plant storage tanks receive the full tank load of cargo in less than 45 minutes.
Arrived in perfect condition, the SINOTO bitumen tanker was immediately placed in use; the degree of insulation was impressive, with little loss of temperature in transit which meant we saved a lot of fuel reheating the tanker; the highly robust build of the tanker is extremely stable over the roads used at our site.
